Review the calendar to select your trip date and view available times. Trains run roughly every 2-1/2 hours.

Any combination of departure and return time can be combined for a custom itinerary. Delaying your return allows you to break for lunch, sight-seeing, or shopping at the opposite town. Both depots are located several blocks from numerous restaurants, shops, and museums. Note: Departure and return times are set at the time of purchase—please call our reservation line or speak to a ticket agent if you are interested in adjusting your return time.

Free parking is available at the Hill City Depot.

As with any railroad, motive power, schedules and fares are subject to change without prior notice.

Departure times and seat assignment is assigned at the time of purchase, so we recommend you purchase your regular season tickets one to two weeks prior to your ride to ensure that your preferred seat type and departure times are available. Walk-up tickets can be purchased on the same day, but one or both legs may be sold out or not contain adjacent seats for your party. Tickets for our popular special event departures, such as Old West Shootouts or Holiday Express, frequently sell out several months in advance.

Ensure you have the final count of your party when making your reservation and selecting seat assignments. In order to sit together, all passengers should be under ONE reservation. Additional seats can be added to an existing reservation by calling our office at 605-574-2222, but we can’t guarantee that additional seats will available adjacent to the existing reservation.

Children one year of age and under are free if held on a lap, but must be accounted for with an infant ticket. A regular child’s ticket is required if you would like a seat for your infant or if they will ride in a car seat. Foldable strollers can be stored at the end of the passenger car during the ride—please ask our on-train staff if you need assistance storing a stroller.

Cancellation Policy: Credit card is charged at time of reservation. Like any ticketed event, all sales are final and no refunds or exchanges are offered unless the ticketed train does not operate, except under the following circumstances and conditions.

Refund Policy: (A) If the train does not arrive at the first destination, a full refund will be given, and (B) If the train makes it to one of the stations but is unable to return, a refund in the amount of half the round-trip ticket price will be made.

Inclement Weather: Please prepare for winter road and traffic conditions! The 1880 Train is not liable for road closures or delays. This event will run no matter the weather.

Rebooking: Guests will need to call 605-574-2222 to speak to a reservation agent.

  • 5. Select Seats

All passenger cars are covered with a roof. Cars labeled as Enclosed have padded seats and windows that open and close. Cars labeled as Open-Sided are open air observation cars covered with a roof and contain wooden seats. All seats are the same price. More ▾

When selecting seats, be sure to switch to the opposite side of the aisle for your return trip so you can see different scenery on the way back. Example: If choosing AB seats on your first leg, choose CD on the return leg. The train does not operate on a loop or turn around at the far end, instead the locomotive shifts to the opposite end of the train for the return trip.

Seats backs flip over allowing you to always face forward once the train switches direction for the return trip or to form a booth out of two benches. All seating is bench style, with two people per bench. The seating area per person is an average of 17.5" wide. If you prefer more spacious seating, please purchase both seats on the bench.

Booth Seating: Several passenger cars have pairs of permanent booths with facing seats, as noted with an asterisk. These permanent booths cannot be adjusted and reserved for parties of four or eight people. Any other pair of benches within the train can also be made into a booth for groups or families with children. If you have an odd number in your party and do not wish to share a bench or booth with someone else you are welcome to purchase an additional ticket.
